LA DOLCE VITA_UPDATE

I meet with S and we marked a deadline which will be MAY 2, 2011. We also discussed areas that need improvement. With his advice, I have decided that I will implement the cameras into the sequence. I will also implement a big studio intro such the famous Universal, 20th Century Fox and MGM intros. Considering how Miramax is often the distributor involved with foreign films, they seem like a good fit for this project. Therefore, I will be using their intro to go along with La Dolce Vita.

LA DOLCE VITA_UPDATE

I am almost done...about 90%. After working on the project for so long I decided to implement the remaining credits at the end, when I finish all the animation work. Also, I am contemplating using cameras within the sequence to focus (zoom in-out) on certain animation that gets lost in the distance.

Finally, I finished all the illustrations. Gladly, I was able to start animating, yuppie! So I am back on track and ready to just set up my scenes or episodes and animate the Ai files In Ae. :).

LA DOLCE VITA_UPDATE

Another late night...another day behind schedule. I will finish the illustrations tomorrow. Officially, I just need to draw Paola and the beach scene. On the other hand, I have messed around with AfterEffects and I didn't do too bad :). Wish me luck folks! I should be able to start animating this no later than this weekend.

*I do need to write a research paper for my art history class. Therefore, it may be essential to take 2 additional weeks for Dolce Vita. More time may be needed but that will be the new extended deadline for now. Thanks S for your support and I will deliver. I promise.

LA DOLCE VITA_UPDATE

Once again it is late or early in the morning. Unfortunately, I am getting behind schedule. I need to finish up the drawings no later than tomorrow Tuesday or else I will blow my deadline. On a positive note, I have completed a lot of work. I only need to draw Paola, a beach scene, Title scene (Giardini Pincio), Mob crowd, 2 small children, and the remainder of my sound effects.

LA DOLCE VITA_Project Timetable

There are 3 weeks for these project. I have split up this period into three stages. The first is pre-production which involves viewing and researching the movie. Second, production of the project which involves the directing and making of the project. The final and third step, involves post-production which will be creating the animation and final editing of the movie sequence. Schedule is as follows and may change due to the ambitious rendition of the italian classic.

1st Week (03/07) - Viewing, researching and analyzing the movie; direction and storyboarding.
2nd Week (03/14) - Illustrating and composing supporting details for the project.
3rd Week (03/21) - Directing and animating material; final edits and cuts.

*Projected to finish on the 25th of March.

LA DOLCE VITA_Prototype/Mock-up

Here is basically the style that I will be going for. This is Marcello, the protagonist, and every supporting character, set and prop will also be illustrated in the same manner.

Project #2_DOLCE VITA Treatment/Style

I have all my notes ready to go for the movie sequence. However, I have two versions or treatments to tackle the project.

The first version is basically drawing silhouetted or very simplified forms that will have very light animation (i.e. the woman's hand moves and her hair locks move a bit). The scenes will have only certain elements move, so its not a full animation treatment. The arrows in the attachment I sent you show in the direction in which each element or figure will move in the composition. In this case, the central character is in the center(static), while the women, the paparazzi, the flashes, the drugs on right side, and the background will move slightly to make a more dynamic composition.

The second version is the one that I am more inclined to do. It will be a full animation treatment, but very simple. The figures and elements will all be silhouetted and the background will be different colors from sequence to sequence, as one transitions from one to the other. In this case, the stairs will be a reoccurring object to show the transition from scene to scene. They will also alternate, meaning that they will start from the left and end in the right and vice versa.

So the difference from both versions is that treatment 1 will have more detailed figurative silhouettes that has limited animations(Fade Ins and Fade Outs between scenes). Whereas, treatment 2 will be very simplified and caricatured silhouettes (Stairs as transitory device between scenes). Both will be lively and colorful to reflect the glamour and other reoccurring themes in the movie.

Based on the conversations with Stan, I will do the second version. Now with his blessing, I will get to work.

Project #2_Movie Sequence Theme DOLCE VITA

I have finally settled on doing the Italian classic, DOLCE VITA. I have a vested interest in italian and want to explore the possibilities that this project may allow. I will be working next on what concept I will use to the style of how it will be portrayed and finally provide storyboards to serve as my references throughout the project.

Project #2_Movie/TV Series Animated Theme

The second project will involve making the beginning or end credits for a Movie or TV Series. I will focus on original artwork through illustrations and the use of AfterEffects to execute. I will have a tentative list of possible choices; they will be diverse and unique (i.e. language, genre, and region.)

DEXTER Teaser_Glove/Fingerprint Version UPDATE

I decided to simplify the design. I went for a single 6 and a fingerprint on the edge of the page. I think this works much better than the other one. I also improved the shadow. Hopefully these changes will improve the composition.

DEXTER Teaser_Can Spill Version UPDATE

I slightly moved illustration down. Additionally, I spelled out six because people were not really getting the meatballs in the shape of a 6.

DEXTER Teaser_ Broken Slide/Darkness Version UPDATE

I decided to make the tagline a little bit smaller. It seemed to crowd the edges of the poster. Made small adjustments with the layout; miniscule but noticeable to the trained eye. Thanks Ms. Brandao for your tutorage. It has come in handy with this version.

DEXTER Teaser_ Broken Slide/Darkness Version UPDATE

DEXTER Teaser_ Hand Version UPDATE

I made the hand 95% smaller to open up some room. I deleted the texture because I felt in the end it was unnecessary. The tagline "Darkness Endures" was made bigger but proportional to the rest of the text and dimensions of poster. The other version will stand as is for visual impact; I believe it can stand on its own as an icon for the next season. I am using a lot of the decision making skills that Stephen Purnell bestowed on me.

Big thanks, Steve-O

Bainstorm...

With the 4th version, I am thinking of dropping all those 6s. I think I'm going to go with just one. I will put blood (add some highlights)on top of the fingerprint and play with the headline 'Yes, I wanna play...I really, really do!' Put all of this on the page that the hand is on.

Brainstorm...

Going back to the Can version, I have had people say that the six is not too distinguishable. The meatballs are suppose to make the shape of the 6. However, it seems that it is not reading that well. I will try to use some more color to help it read better.

Brainstorm...

I am somewhat satisfied with this version. The concept is that Dexter is getting careless even when he is fully prepared (i.e. the gloves but there are tons of fingerprints with blood mocking him); I am alluding to the possibility of him getting caught. It needs something or less of something. I am not quite sure but, again, I will look at it tomorrow with fresh eyes. Any comments are highly welcome and appreciated on this one...

Brainstorm...

I like the idea so far with the spilled can. However, it seems unfinished. I quickly added some white highlights to the blood which have helped. I will see it tomorrow with fresh eyes and take it from there.

Brainstorm...

I am thinking of dropping the texture from the poster. I am also considering doing a poster with a black background, white hand and red 'Dexter'. 'SEASON' will be in white and possibly play with 2011 and the headline "Darkness Endures."

DEXTER Final 4!

After discussing all the sketches with peers, family, friends and fans of the show, I have committed to this 4 working ideas. I will fully render these and show them to my professor and current mentor Stan Anderson AKA "S".

On the Side

Due to unfortunate events in my life, I will give back to those who have helped me so much. As a token of appreciation for a wonderful mother and daughter, I will re-design their business identity. Stay tuned to find out...

Preliminary Sketches

Project #1 - Dexter Teaser Posters

For my first assignment, I will make 4 teaser posters for Showtime's Dexter series. I will research, observe and analyze the series to find interesting themes or instances that will resonate with current audience and spark interest in new viewers. My concept is still evolving but I want to cleverly incorporate the number 6 in the teaser posters. For now, I will rely on symbols and reoccurring themes and motifs to be the inspiration for this project.
